PAD Contracts win metalworks contract for One Broadgate, London

PAD Contracts have been appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine to design, manufacture and install architectural metalworks for One Broadgate in central London.

One Broadgate

One Broadgate is Sir Robert McAlpine’s fifth project for British Land, a leading UK property company, and investors GIC, the most recent being the multi-award winning 100 Liverpool St project.

The original eight-storey office building at 1-2 Broadgate, built in 1987, was vacated in 2020 and demolished in 2021. The new build will be a 14-storey mixed-space structure comprising 500,000 sq ft of office space on the higher levels and 46,000 sq ft of retail outlets on the lower floors. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.

One Broadgate and sustainability

Designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Ltd, One Broadgate is a highly sustainable scheme with key design objectives that focus on a whole life carbon approach. This includes embodied carbon of construction so that the building can operate with minimal carbon emissions and the least use of energy possible.

The new development will comprise 546,000 sq ft of potentially the most sustainable mixed-use space in London. PAD Contracts are always keen to be involved in sustainable projects and endeavour to operate as sustainably as possible at all times, so the key objectives of this project very much align with our own.

Appointment of PAD Contracts

This is not the first time PAD Contracts have been appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine for a high profile, London based project. We recently completed an architectural metalwork installation that included a state-of-the-art feature staircase at Gateway Central and West, White City London.

We’re delighted that the quality of our work and our collaborative approach has influenced Sir Robert McAlpine’s decision to appoint PAD Contracts once again.

Scope of works

PAD Contracts have been appointed to design, manufacture and install metalworks for One Broadgate as follows:

  • The central aspect of our work will be the balustrading.

This will include the design and installation of the balustrading for the 14-storey staircase. As per the architect’s brief, the balustrading will be a different colour on each floor to complement all other fixtures and furnishings. We will achieve this  through the manufacture of painted steel infill panels.

  • Access walkways, ladders, stairs and guardrails in the plant rooms that will be located at the top of the building.

The plant rooms will house building services equipment such as ventilation, electrical distribution, water pumps and pipework, gas pipework and so on. As such it is essential that the walkways, ladders, stairs and guardrails are safe, robust and of the highest quality.

  • Electric roller shutters and support steelworks.

With many moving parts, metalwork expertise is essential in the manufacture and installation of industrial roller shutters. Support steelworks must also be sufficiently robust and facilitate full functionality.

  • Basement back of house works.

Back of house is where offices, storage and services are located. Here, our works will include corner guards, wall protection and several small staircases, amongst other metalworks.

  • End of journey facilities

PAD Contracts will be designing, manufacturing and installing bike storage areas, lockers and  maintenance stations. End of journey facilities encourage employees of both the offices and retail outlets to cycle to work, which aligns with the sustainability ethos of the project.
