Oxford House, London

PAD Contracts recently completed architectural metalwork installations for the 124,400 sq ft new build Oxford House project, Oxford Street, London.

The project

Oxford House is located directly opposite the Dean Street entrance to the new Tottenham Court Road Elizabeth Line station.

Oxford House provides new Grade A office space (80,000 sq ft) and retail units (41800 sq ft). This is an overall square footage increase of 30% on the original refurbishment scheme which was withdrawn when Facebook no longer wanted to rent the space.

PAD Contracts were commissioned as architectural metalwork specialists for the project by property investment and development company, Great Portland Estates. We worked alongside architects Orms and real estate and investment group Lendlease.

Bespoke metalwork

For construction projects of this calibre in prominent locations such as London’s West End, bespoke metalwork is the most fitting solution. Customised fittings enhance the quality of new builds, and for buildings like Oxford House they contribute to attracting higher rents.

Through bespoke metalwork the architect’s vision can be realised more accurately than using mass produced metalwork structures. Elegant staircases, balustrades and handles, and architectural metalwork feature pieces, all elevate the aesthetic quality of prestigious new build projects.

PAD Contracts work at Oxford House

Our bespoke metalwork designs were used on this project in several areas:

  • Reception Staircase
  • Feature Staircase
  • Bike Racks
  • BMU track covers
  • Glass balustrades to terraces
  • Automated gates

PAD Contracts offer a full design fabrication and installation service for all types of staircases. These vary from straight flight escape routes to customised, elaborate feature staircases.

For Oxford House the feature staircase was to be a focal point, cutting through all seven floors. The contemporary curved glass balustrades are housed in black steel frames, contrasting with the wooden treads and black risers of the stairs. The curved wooden handrails sit on top of the black steel frames.

As you look down from the top of the stairwell to all seven floors, the feature staircase creates a compact repeat triangle shape.

Glass balustrades were designed and installed on the terraces to house the garden and seating area.

Practical architectural metalwork solutions

As well as design-led architectural metalwork, PAD Contracts also supplied bespoke metalwork solutions for practical applications. We designed and built secure automated gates for the yard using blended materials that are durable and visually appealing. Bike racks were also supplied for the building’s occupants to encourage an environmentally friendly mode of transport in an area that is challenging for cars.

BMU (Building Maintenance Unit) track covers were designed and installed on the building exterior to facilitate maintenance work.

While these practical solutions may be considered less design-led, in fact architects and developers are increasingly focused on ensuring that these essential elements of new builds are designed and manufactured to high standards to be in keeping with the quality of the rest of the project.
