07 May The Londoner Hotel Staircase: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Off-Site Construction
The Londoner Hotel
The Londoner is a luxury super boutique hotel situated on the southwest corner of Leicester Square. Owned by Edwardian Hotels the Londoner is a new development of 350-bedrooms and cinema complex with eight storeys above ground and six below ground, complete with bars and restaurants.
The Challenge
The iconic Londoner hotel, a masterpiece by Edwardian Hotels London, demanded a truly showstopping centrepiece – a grand staircase bathed in a luxurious antique brass finish. However, traditional on-site construction presented a challenge. Building a staircase early in the construction process often disrupts other trades and risks damage during later stages.
Overcoming Logistical Challenges
One of the biggest challenges that PAD Contracts faced was the fact that most floors of the Londoner Hotel are below ground level. This meant that the traditional method of building the staircase on-site wouldn’t work. To overcome this, PAD Contracts decided to prefabricate the staircase in sections off-site. This approach not only ensured a smooth construction process but also minimised disruption to other trades working on the project.
PAD Contracts Steps Up
This is where PAD Contracts’ expertise in off-site construction shone. By building the staircase entirely off-site, they ensured a smooth and efficient process for the rest of the hotel’s construction.
The Off-Site Advantage
Building the staircase in a controlled environment offered several benefits:
- Minimised Disruption: With the staircase constructed off-site, there were fewer tradespeople on-site, minimising disruption and allowing for a faster overall build schedule for the hotel.
- Reduced Risk of Damage: Traditionally, a staircase is one of the first elements built, leaving it vulnerable to damage during later construction phases. Off-site construction eliminated this risk, ensuring the pristine arrival of the finished product.
- Enhanced Quality Control: The controlled environment of an off-site workshop allowed for meticulous attention to detail, resulting in a flawless antique brass Metalite® finish that adds a touch of grandeur to the hotel.
The Engineering Feat
The staircase wasn’t just built off-site; it was meticulously designed and engineered in sections. This modular approach allowed for efficient transportation and installation.
The staircase for the Londoner Hotel is a marvel of precision engineering. Each section was designed and fabricated to ensure a perfect fit on-site. To allow for easy access for fixing the sections together, the staircase incorporates strategically placed circular holes that are covered with discreet plates after installation.
PAD Contracts’ expertise came into play again as they devised rigging solutions to flawlessly assemble the staircase, section by section, from the basement upwards, spanning an impressive six floors.
The Grand Unveiling
The final product speaks for itself. The meticulously crafted staircase, a testament to PAD Contracts’ off-site construction expertise, now graces The Londoner Hotel, adding a touch of elegance and luxury to this iconic establishment.
Outcome
PAD Contracts were tasked with creating the stunning centrepiece for the new Londoner Hotel – a grand staircase finished in a luxurious antique brass. However, the traditional approach of building the staircase on-site posed a significant challenge. With most floors of the hotel being below ground level, constructing the staircase on-site would have disrupted other trades and risked damage during later stages of construction.
PAD Contracts’ expertise in off-site construction provided the perfect solution. By prefabricating the staircase in sections off-site, they ensured a smooth and efficient construction process. Each section was meticulously designed and fabricated to ensure a perfect fit on-site. To allow for easy access for fixing the sections together, the staircase incorporates strategically placed circular holes that are covered with discreet plates after installation.
PAD Contracts also took great care to protect the staircase during delivery. Each section was carefully wrapped in protective material and transported on specially designed trolleys. These trolleys ensured that the delicate surfaces of the staircase were not damaged during transportation or installation.
This project exemplifies PAD Contracts’ commitment to innovation and efficiency.
By embracing off-site construction, they ensured a faster, smoother build process for the hotel, all while delivering a stunning architectural masterpiece.
