Gateway Central and West

Project Focus: Gateway Central and West, White City, London

PAD Contracts were appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) on behalf of Stanhope for an architectural metalwork installation at the Gateway Development of White City Place, London.

The project

White City Place is West London’s creative hub. The development, described by Stanhope as “a global business district for world class companies”, includes offices, shared spaces, restaurants, stunning roof tops and collaborative zones, all connected by tree-lined avenues. Occupants include the BBC, ITV, L’Oréal, the Royal College of Art and pharmaceutical company, Novartis.

The Gateway comprises three new buildings that expand the campus by 800,000 sq ft: Gateway Central, Gateway West and Gateway East Tower. Gateway Central will be L’Oréal’s new UK headquarters.

PAD Contracts’ work at Gateway West and Gateway Central

Architectural metalwork was required for the Gateway West and Gateway Central buildings of the White City development. Gateway West is now complete, and Gateway Central is due for completion in August 2022. The third and final building, Gateway East Tower, is under construction.

The most noteworthy high quality metalwork from PAD Contracts that was required for this project was the bespoke staircase.

Feature staircase

PAD Contracts designed a high quality metalwork, bespoke staircase. Due to its central location and impact on the rest of the development, it was essential that the staircase was completed during the primary frame installation: a very early stage of the project.

The feature staircase was prefabricated in sections and assembled in the PAD Contracts factory prior to delivery to ensure the fit of the structure exactly matched the specification.

BMU Parking Pergolas

PAD Contracts designed building maintenance unit (BMU) parking pergolas for the roof terrace at Levels 4 & 8. The BMU pergolas were manufactured at the PAD Contracts factory and transported to site to be lifted into position as assembled units.

Stair core balustrades

PAD Contracts installed stair core balustrades onto the precast units on site. In keeping with health and safety regulations, the stair core balustrades were installed on both sides of stairwells and stair cases with an uninterrupted flow.

Curved reception screen

The unique and imposing, curved reception screen was fabricated in sections and assembled in the PAD Contracts factory to check the fit of the unit prior to finishing and delivery.

Cycle store security screen

The cycle store security screen was also fabricated in sections at the PAD Contracts factory to ensure that the fit of the cycle store was to specification before applying the finish and delivering to site. With a focus on avoiding the use of cars to get to work, cycle stores are becoming increasingly popular in developments of this type.

Roof plant screening

For the Gateway West building, PAD Contracts installed a roof plant screening scheme. Panels were then removed for the installation of the plants. Roof plant screenings align with net carbon zero targets in construction and are therefore being installed on large buildings, such as those of the Gateway project, due to the available roof space.

Back of house metalwork

Back of house (BOH) refers to functional, behind the scenes systems and installations that are essential for the operation of the building, but which customers and stakeholders rarely see.

For the Gateway buildings project, PAD Contracts installed various back of house metalworks including riser steelwork and flooring, ladders, platforms, corner guards, wheel stoppers, door protection barriers, entrance pedestals, roof edge protection and metal gates.
