24 Sep The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) new endoscopy unit
PAD Contracts has been appointed by main contractor Kier to design, produce and install architectural metalwork for the expansion of the endoscopy unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Orpington, London Borough of Bromley.
The project was commissioned by King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. It is expected that the build of the £25 million standalone, two-storey endoscopy unit will be completed in spring 2025.
This isn’t the first time that leading construction and infrastructure services group Kier has called upon PAD Contracts’ expertise in architectural metalwork, from full design through to fabrication and installation. PAD Contracts was chosen by Kier to provide various internal and external architectural metalwork installations for the development of The Sainsbury Foundation Laboratory.
Project overview
The new 2400m² endoscopy unit at PRUH has been designed by architects Gilling Dodd to provide vital healthcare services, including provision for an additional 4500 cancer patient appointments annually at the hospital.
An improved patient experience aligned with accredited patient pathways was a key design influence for the new building. The available facilities before construction consisted of just two rooms dedicated to endoscopy services. This was deemed inadequate for the area which has a high proportion of older people.
The new facilities will include consultation, treatment and recovery rooms. There will also be a sterile services unit, along with rest spaces for staff and state-of-the-art training rooms.
The construction of the new unit is part of a wider drive by the NHS to increase the number of endoscopy rooms that are available nationally. PAD Contracts is delighted to be involved in such a significant, national NHS initiative that will benefit many patients across the country.
PAD Contracts’ architectural metalwork for the Princess Royal University Hospital endoscopy unit
For this new two-storey building, PAD Contracts has been commissioned for multiple architectural metalwork installations.
Currently at the design and manufacturing stage, PAD Contracts will supply the following metalwork elements:
- Robust, industry standard roof edge guardrails for safety and to prevent materials or people falling from the roof
- External stairs between the roof levels with cat ladder access for when maintenance or inspections are required
- Acoustic louvre screening to the roof plant, and steelwork to provide additional support. Acoustic louvre screens reduce noise while still facilitating airflow circulation around plant items
- Plant room louvres in the external walls to circulate air and prevent water ingress or the infiltration of dirt and debris
- Access platforms linking internal areas with the roof
- Internal balustrades and wall handrails
- Ground floor external handrails and balustrades to stairs and ramps.
PAD Contracts is working closely with Kier and project engineers Perega to ensure that all architectural metalwork elements are designed and installed to expected standards and project outcomes. Our industry expertise and problem solving skills will be used to help keep the project within agreed timescales and on budget.
