16 Oct PAD Contracts helping to preserve heritage with Architectural Metalwork at the National Gallery’s NG200 Initiative
At PAD Contracts, we take great pride in our role as architectural metalwork specialists, and there’s no project more illustrious and historically significant than the NG200 initiative at the National Gallery.
In 2024, the National Gallery, one of London’s most iconic cultural landmarks, will celebrate its remarkable 200-year journey. This admired institution is not only renowned for its extensive art collection but also for its architectural grandeur. Our involvement in this historic project involves a new entrance in the Sainsbury wing and seamlessly connecting it to the main Grade 1 listed building. Additionally, we are entrusted with the task of installing glass balustrades in the new entrance and meticulously refurbishing the existing gates on the Sainsbury wing and Jubilee Walk.
The National Gallery, situated in the heart of Trafalgar Square, has been an enduring symbol of art and culture since its establishment in 1824. With a distinguished collection spanning Western European paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries, it stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of human creativity.
The New Entrance
The Sainsbury wing, a remarkable piece of architecture, is set to receive a new entrance that combines modern design with respect for its historical significance. Our team is working on installing glass balustrades at this entrance, which will play a crucial role in improving the gallery’s visual appeal and safety. These ‘all-glass’ balustrades will enable visitors to appreciate the architectural beauty of both the old and new structures.
Restoring Historical Gates
Preservation isn’t solely about creating new marvels; it’s also about nurturing and restoring the past. As part of the NG200 project, PAD Contracts has undertaken the delicate task of refurbishing the historic gates on the Sainsbury wing and Jubilee Walk. These gates are treasures, adorned with intricate metalwork and steeped in historical significance. Our team is dedicated to ensuring these gates retain their original charm and meet contemporary safety and accessibility standards.
Working on a project of such historical prominence comes with its unique set of challenges. The integration of a new entrance with a Grade 1 listed building while preserving its individual architectural integrity demands the utmost precision and expertise.
Installing glass balustrades requires quality craftsmanship to achieve the desired look and meet strict safety standards.
The NG200 project at the National Gallery represents a pivotal moment where tradition and innovation harmoniously coexist. PAD Contracts, is proud to be an integral part of this transformative journey. As the National Gallery marks its bicentennial in 2024, the new entrance in the Sainsbury wing, featuring our glass balustrades, and the meticulously restored historic gates on the Sainsbury wing and Jubilee Walk will stand as enduring symbols of the gallery’s timeless legacy.
