One Broadgate, Liverpool Street London

One Broadgate, Liverpool Street London

PAD Contracts was appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine on behalf of British Land for architectural metalworks on the prestigious Broadgate project, Liverpool Street, London.

The Project

The mixed use, 14 storey Broadgate site is located at One Broadgate, Liverpool Street. The One Broadgate building offers 500,000 sq ft of premium office space, with retail outlets located on the ground and lower ground floors, now known as Broadgate Central. The wider Broadgate complex offers 289,000 sq ft of retail, hospitality and leisure space. Adopting a whole life carbon approach, the One Broadgate project is sustainability driven.

PAD Contracts was delighted to once again be appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine for such a transformative, multi-use redevelopment project.

PAD Contracts’ Work for One Broadgate and Broadgate Central

Balustrading

We designed, manufactured and installed balustrading for the 14-storey staircase in a different colour for each floor, as per the architect’s brief. This was to ensure the architectural metalwork elements complemented the design pallet for all fixtures and fittings, which was different for each floor. We manufactured and painted steel infill panels to achieve the different aesthetics.

Guardrails

Externally, we designed contemporary guardrails with horizontal wire cable to run along the side of One Broadgate to create a protective safety barrier between the building and the pedestrian area.

Handrails

For the external steps leading to the Broadgate Central main entrance and side entrance, we designed architectural metalwork handrails with linear LED lighting fitted to the underside to project light to the ground for greater visibility and safety. During the evening and night time, the lighting not only provides waymarking, it is also highly effective in drawing attention to the entrance of the building and creating a contemporary aesthetic.

Plant room metalwork

In the plant rooms we installed essential safety metalwork elements including walkways, stairs, ladders and guardrails to provide access and protection to essential plant such as ventilation, electrical services, water and gas equipment and pipework.

Electric roller shutters and support steelworks

We designed and installed bespoke industrial electric roller shutters with support steelworks for structural integrity and to provide a secure mounting point for the shutters. These were designed to a high specification to facilitate and maintain the robust functionality of the high-use equipment.

Back of house works

For the back of house area in the basement of the building we installed safety elements including corner guards, along with wall protection and small staircases to access the offices, storage and other service areas.

End of journey amenities

In line with the sustainability drive of the project and the expected fundamentals of modern city living, the building offers residents and visitors end of journey amenities to encourage cycling and wellbeing. We designed, manufactured and installed architectural metalwork bicycle storage areas, lockers and maintenance stations.

Challenges of the Project

Working in collaboration with other trades on such a large, high profile project, it was essential that we hit agreed deadlines and allowed for flexibility where necessary. To overcome access issues, the 14-storey staircase was manufactured off site in sections and installed into position at the appropriate time.

The whole life carbon approach to this project included the embodied carbon of the construction process so we were careful to consider and monitor the carbon impact of our designs and all manufacture and installation elements of our architectural metalwork. PAD Contracts is committed to working sustainably on all projects so this approach aligned with our own environmental targets.

Client Satisfaction

Both British Land and Sir Robert McAlpine were pleased with the versatility and quality of PAD Contracts’ architectural metalwork for this project, and the way in which our bespoke products aligned with all design specifications.

Our willingness to be flexible and collaborate seamlessly with other contractors helped to deliver the project within expected timescales.
