Queen Elizabeth Hospital, South East London

Project focus

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, South East London

PAD Contracts have been appointed by McLaren Construction for metalwork design and fabrication and site installation as part of the £30m infrastructure works at the 482-bed Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, South East London.

The Project

Due for completion in June 2024, the 80-week programme of infrastructure works at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, South East London, has already begun. The works have been designed to improve crucial high and low voltage electrical distribution and ventilation across the site, including the replacement of air handling units, to bring the site up to modern service standards.

McLaren has worked with clinicians, the estates team and the facilities management provider to plan the works around the operational needs of the hospital which will be ‘live’ throughout the works

.

PAD Contracts’ work on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, South East London

PAD Contracts will be on site in the coming weeks to deliver and install the updated framework for the area of the hospital that houses the electrical infrastructure, oxygen supply and ventilation that is distributed to clinical areas. These key clinical areas include operating theatres, pathology, the delivery suite, the special care baby unit and wards.

Our 15 metre steel beams will be craned into the existing structure through purpose-made holes in the floors. A significant amount of pre-works planning with the contractor and subcontractor has gone into making the installation as swift and efficient as possible. This will avoid unnecessary delays and help to keep the project on track.

The refurbished structure will create a new AHU (air handling unit) platform from which the AHU units will distribute and control the hospital’s central air conditioning. In clinical environments the appropriate housing of the AHU is critical to its operation. AHUs collect outside air and room air, remove dust and other particles from the collected air, adjust the temperature and humidity and then supply comfortable and refreshing air-conditioned air into the rooms through ducts.

For the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with 9 new air handling units, 19 refurbished air handling units and 3 x 1.5KVA generators, we have designed the new AHU platform to maximise the efficient operation of air handling across the site

.

PAD Contracts will also supply the AHU platform’s walkway grille, the steps between the different levels and the handrails.

A significant challenge for all contractors is that the hospital will be fully operational throughout the site-wide infrastructure works. This, and the limited access to site, makes the planning and coordination of the architectural metalwork key to the success of this project.

Client satisfaction

The infrastructure works will bring the electrical and ventilation systems of Queen Elizabeth Hospital up to required modern standards to benefit patient care. Causing minimal disruption to the operation of the site during the 80-week programme of  works is a primary prerequisite of the client.

PAD Contracts will continue to collaborate with McLaren, subcontractor Dowds Group and fellow contractors to support Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust’s “business as usual” policy by delivering the works without disrupting hospital procedures and operations.
